New Bride - Hard Egg

So be happy with your wife and find your joy with the woman you married. Proverbs 5:18 - Good News Translation

As a fresh-faced bride at the age of 19, I was determined to surprise my husband with one of his favorite snacks: pickled eggs. Little did I know, this well-intentioned endeavor would lead to a hilariously memorable mishap that still brings laughter after 44 years of marriage.

It all began innocently enough. I had used up the last of the pickles for our supper and absentmindedly left the pickle juice sitting on the cabinet, planning to dispose of the jar later. That's when my husband, Butch, noticed the empty jar and exclaimed, "There's enough pickle juice for pickled eggs! I love them."

Having never made pickled eggs before, my mind raced back to my teenage years spent at the skating rink, where a giant jar of pickled eggs always sat on the counter. Seeking guidance from Butch, I asked him how to make them. His instructions seemed straightforward enough: boil the eggs until they're hard, then place them in the jar and let them sit in the refrigerator for a few days.

The next morning, I eagerly boiled the eggs, allowed them to cool, and proudly placed them in the fridge, thinking I had nailed it. (I can still hear my late father's voice teasingly reminding me, "That's what you get for thinking!")

Feeling accomplished, I excitedly informed Butch that the pickled eggs were ready to be enjoyed, albeit after a few days of marinating. Little did I know, the punchline to this culinary tale was just around the corner.

In a classic case of "you had one job," Butch, eager for a pickled egg, went to the fridge, opened the jar, inserted a fork... and CRACK! To our collective amusement, it turned out that Butch had forgotten to mention a crucial detail: the eggs needed to be peeled before soaking in the juice.

As Proverbs 5:18 befittingly suggests, we've certainly enjoyed our youthful misadventures together, even if they involved a few cracked eggs along the way.

This lighthearted episode remains a cherished memory in our journey as a couple, reminding us to laugh at life's unexpected twists and savor every moment, pickled eggs and all.

Bouncing Baby Joy – Two Perspectives on Innocence and Faith

When you hear the phrase  “bouncing baby,”  what comes to mind? For many of us, it’s the image of a giggling child joyfully bouncing on the knee of a parent or grandparent. It’s a universal and heartwarming moment—filled with laughter, love, and just enough strain on the legs of the “horsey” to remind them they’re not as young as they used to be. But they don’t mind. They keep bouncing, because the joy on that little face is worth every second. That exchange—tired legs for giggles—becomes a quiet testament to the strength of love. But recently, I was reminded that not all bouncing babies are human. I live in a quiet, wonderful small town in Nebraska. Each day, I have the privilege of taking a 25-minute drive to and from work. That drive winds through the Nebraska countryside, which in springtime transforms into a natural nursery. Bulls, pigs, sheep, and cows dot the fields. And in the midst of it all—new life. Baby animals discovering the world for the very first time. Just la...

What is your Dream House?

What is your dream house? A Penthouse apartment? A mansion on the hill? A fishing cabin by a lake? Or maybe a tiny house? Think about it we have so many wonderful places we “could” live. Right? A farm house close to family. Or a house in a neighborhood with friends close by. Even a house that looks like it’s falling apart at the seams. We call all of them home. BUT: What about those who don’t have a choice? Poverty stricken people who are crowded into small areas with many others in the same circumstances. Choice they’ve made? Probably not or is it all they’ve ever known. In this holiday day season, we focus on a tiny baby who could have come down to a Kings castle with all the perks that come with it. Being waited on hand & foot, wanting nothing. However, this little one, the one we call Lord of Lords & King of Kings chose to come into the muck and guck of a sty made for animals. A stable, a manger. Luke 2:7 “She gave birth to her fir...

The White Cycle

Joy Joy Joy…how can we be joyous when all we’ve seen for the last several weeks is white. With all the colors of the rainbow that he Lord provides for us to see…I think we are stuck in the white cycle. I got to thinking about how many different colors of white there are, so I looked online at Sherwin-Williams and Bengamin Moore.   These business specialize in color and boy to they. Sherwin-Williams has 204 and Bengamin Moore has 224 different shades of white. I found it interesting about why they name the colors as they did.   Here are some of my thoughts. Sherwin-Williams Extra White – must have a little extra stuff Nice White – could this one be politer then the others Simple White – is it easier on the eyes Smart White – if I ever get to paint an office I’m using this one, it could make me intelligent Dreamy White & Restful White – will I sleep better if I paint the bedroom with these? Benjamin Moore Timid White – this must be shyer then the other whites Seapearl...
